The first thing you need to do when there’s a burst pipe is isolate the water main at the meter. A lot of the time the meter is old and can be difficult to turn off. Perhaps take a shifter with you just in case you need a bit more leverage on the meter.

Once the water is off that will eliminate the damage that the leak has already caused. You can turn a tap on in the back yard or kitchen sink so the water drains through the tap not the leak.

Hot Water

There’s nothing worse than having no hot water. It may be because water is leaking out of the tank or you may just not be getting hot water. If the hot water unit has a PowerPoint it may just need to be re set. Go outside and switch unit off for 10 seconds and turn it back on. If you have Hot water that’s great, you have brought some time.

If you find that the hot water service is leaking rapidly you can turn the valve on the water feed to tank. This is general located on the left hand side of the tank and you will see a valve that looks like a black coke lid. Turn it clock wise and that will isolate the tank.
